The destruction of the NEOplanet that followed rendered dangerous fallout along the territory around it and King Sorin's planets leaving this one the only one safe enough to dwell so they opted to rebuild then relocate out of the kingdom.
Much of the village was destroy by a crystalline ship crashing to the ground, it left countless shards that were used in the rebuild leaving a stain glass aesthetic and cultural importance of the crystals both destroying and bringing in a new age free of the curse. (supposedly)
The roof and walls are very enclosed, not underground but urban structural confided, with little view of the sky showing. There is damage to the ecosystem/skyline from the aftermath pollution so they really have to amplify the light into it.
The waterway is how the city channels energy instead of solar power, it also takes townsfolks across in boats and is home to aquatic species.
Population: Various alien mixes, refugees fleeing the Overlord
All human refugees in the originally village died off in the last 5 years from a rapid cancer from Boren's ship explosion.
(Meredith was in the Bloodwatch station during the vampire mission at the time and not stricken, now considered 'the last human'.)
